Overview

The analysis of genomic data has become increasingly feasible, even in non-model organisms, thanks to the “omics” revolution. This is enabling key insights into the evolutionary dynamics of populations and species from an unprecedented perspective and level of detail. This workshop will focus on methodological, theoretical, and empirical developments, that advance our understanding of evolution in natural and domesticated populations, spanning from pangenomics to population genomics. These advances have particular significance for the conservation of biodiversity, where detailed understanding of genetic diversity and population connectivity is at the heart of effective species and ecosystem management.

Format

The workshop will run for five days, with three core sessions taking place from September 8th to 10th. Each day will include theoretical lectures and hands-on practical sessions, led by experts in their respective field of genomics. Additionally, an introductory day (September 7th) will cover essential bioinformatics skills and best practices for coding. The last morning (11th September) will be dedicated to research proposals writing with special emphasis on funding sources such as ERC and MSCA grants. The session will be enriched by a first-hand experience of a successful grant winner with a practical session.

Extras

The workshop will also include outreach initiatives and knowledge dissemination. On the evening of September 9th, a board game night focused on evolutionary biology will be hosted at the Hangar Pub in Ferrara. This event will be open to the general public.

Participants with a strong interest in conservation genetics and genomics are warmly invited to the first meeting in Conservation Genetics and Genomics, that is going to take place in the same location right after the end of this workshop and have the duration of one and a half days. For more information visit the dedicated page at GGC.

Targeted Audience

The summer school is aimed at 30 students / researchers from Italian and international institutions with a background in biology interested in learning the new frontiers of the genomics, from pangenomics to population and conservation genomics. The workshop is sponsored by the Italian Society for Evolutionary Biology (SIBE).
